Hi All
So I posted on this tribe back last summer when I took into my head to learn to airbrush body art and do it at Burning Man.... of all the most sensible places to start... fucking playa dust. Needless to say the project was rapidly abandoned as futile with so much dust blowing in my direction every time I even suggested bringing it out. I got so frustrated that when I got back I packed the stuff up and forgot about it..... but now it is spring again and I HAVE to master this project because it's so much time, money and energy already invested into it.
Every time I bring out the airbrush to practice on people there always seems to be a new problem.... I am now an expert in taking apart my airbrush to clean it.... so that's done. Now it is trying to understand what paints to use.... so this is my problem... if anyone has any input I would be most grateful!
I have a Badger dual action airbrush.... the initial paints I used were Badger ones that came with the kit. These worked fine... but they were small containers and ran out. The art store I go to doesn't sell Badger paints but had an abundance of other airbrush paints... assuming these would be fine as they say on the label Createx "airbrush" paints I spent a lot of money on a rainbow of colors. These paints don't come out of my airbrush and clog it up every time I use it. I have tried watering them down but they still don't work. I have tried Kryolan paints which work but they so expensive. Can anyone tell me why the createx paints don't work.....?
Thanks
Zephyr :)

Re: Airbrush frustrations! Tips most eagerly appreciated
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 8:16 PMDon't give up Zephyr! Its all trial-and-error to find your art sweetspot, and you provide a valuable service: changing spectators into participants, burners and art!
My friends and I did a lot of trial and found what worked best wasn't actually airbrush body paint but airbrush body makeup!
www.michaeldavy.com/
It flows very easy and dries quickly, and is very forgiving on mistakes. It's kind of pricey, and you might find something similar for less, but trust me Michael Davy works!
Keep trying, and keep asking questions here and on all the other bodyart websites!

Wed, March 26, 2008 - 4:19 PMHi Zephyr,
So you were on the playa last year, and had trouble with the wind.
Shame you didn't come on over to the Body Art Guild, we've been doing airbrush body art, (along with paint brush, henna, latex, markers, etc) on the playa for 5 years now. And yes, airbrush on the playa can work fine. (A good shelter that blocks the wind is key though.)
PAINTs
OK, first off, for God sake know that the air has to be set to 20lbs or less, otherwise you can inject air into the skin of the person you are painting. This gives a very similar problem as the "Bends" when scuba diving.
2nd - ONLY USE PAINT DESIGNED FOR BODIES. Don't be using acrylic. You'll have lots of fun when some one has a reaction and their skin goes crazy.
There are several good airbrush body paints. Most ain't cheap.
AirbrushBodyArt airbrushbodyart.com.au/ makes some nice stuff. It's temp tattoo ink, so it's waterproof, and can last a few days.
Graftobian makes an alcohol/water hybrid that's pretty good. It also holds up to sweat and water, but soap takes it away. www.graftobian.com/index5.htm
You can practice with T-shirt paint, (acrylic) on old T-shirts. But use BODY PAINT when painting someones skin.
Good Luck,
Bertrum

Wed, March 26, 2008 - 4:28 PMCreatex not working.
Sorry, I didn't really answer you question directly.
Createx makes a variety of paints for the airbrush. First is to know what type you got. T-shirt ?
Createx T-shirt paint is designed to use at about 40 to 60lbs of pressure. Too low, and it will gum up.
Did you shake the shit out of the bottle ?
Are you using a gravity feed or siphon airbrush ??
Are you keeping the air on, then pulling back to put paint on, then stopping the air??
If you just take your finger off the air and paint at the same time, you'll have a clogged brush pretty quick.
How old are the paints? Sometimes old paint get's just too separated, and it drys too. You should be able to shake it up and have it stay the same consitancy for an hour after shaking.
There was a really good article in Airbrush Action magazine last year on troubleshooting an airbrush set up. Believe it had a clown on the cover. Might want to look it up.
DONT USE CREATEX on SKIN
Good Luck
